History: Elena Gilbert is a young girl who is still recovering from the loss of her parents. She and her brother Jeremy now live with their Aunt Jenna in Mystic Falls, Virginia. Elena constantly writes her feelings out in a diary which has helped her to deal with some of the pain she has had over the loss of her family. She seems to be a pretty ordinary girl, until Stefan Salvatore comes to town and changes her life forever.
Elena used to be on the cheerleading squad, but she quit. Her best friends are Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes. Very soon after meeting Stefan, mysterious things are happening in Mystic Falls. There are "animal attacks" and the town is in a panic. Elena is drawn to Stefan, and Stefan is drawn to Elena for a very different reason. Elena resembles his beloved Katherine, lost to him many years ago.
When the attraction between Stefan and Elena starts to grow, enter Damon, Stefan's brother, and it's like history repeating itself all over again. Elena has a little trouble dealing with the vampire aspect of everything when she finds out about Stefan. At first she doesn't want anything to do with him, but then she comes around.
When Damon changes and kills Vicki, Elena asks him to erase Jeremy's memories because she doesn't like seeing him in pain, but that was crossing a line. As things progress, Elena learns that her best friend Bonnie is a witch, and that her ancestor Emily knew the Salvatore's back in the old Mystic Falls. With vampires and witches, can Elena's life get anymore complicated? Apparently it can. After making love to Stefan, Elena finds a picture of Katherine and realizes what attracted Stefan to her in the first place. Heartbroken and in shock, Elena runs off, drives away, and hits someone with her car, flipping it. As the figure approached her, she tried to get free of the car and escape.
Personality: Elena is a little unsure of herself at time, but full of compassion and morality. This is tested a bit though, when she asks Damon to erase Jeremy's memories. She does not like to see people she loves in pain. She is very protective of her brother, because he is all that she has left. She wants to do what is right, but in so many ways...she doesn't quite know what that is. She is still greiving the loss of her parents, and finds it hard to express herself except in writing. She's a teenage girl who has seen and experienced more than most people do in a lifetime. She's confused and vulnerable, and that's only on the surface. Elena Gilbert is a very complicated young woman.
